Case Study
An overall goal for an auto repairs organisation was to improve customer service. The
Accounts Department was responsible for customers’ accounts and invoices. A team from
Accounts identified some more specific objectives to help achieve the overall goal of
improving customer service.
The Accounts Department’s specific objectives were to:
• Process orders within 24 hours
• Provide accurate and timely invoices
• Resolve invoice queries immediately
To be an effective member of your work team and your organisation one should understand
the goals, objectives and tasks of your workplace. This will help one to see ‘the big picture’
and to understand the role you play within it.
Completing your responsibilities in a positive manner
Team members who understand the importance of meeting their responsibilities in a
positive manner generally meet their goals and objectives and have a happy, enjoyable
workplace environment. Workgroups where members are negative and fail to cooperate
and support each other often fail to meet their goals and objective. They have work
environments that are less enjoyable and harmonious.
As a team member, you need to understand your own roles and responsibilities and follow
organisational policies and procedures, as well as any codes of conduct that have been
established. You need a positive attitude to your work and should strive to achieve good
relationships with others in your workplace.
Understanding your duties
To complete your responsibilities and duties in a positive manner, you need to have a clear
understanding of what those responsibilities and duties are. Most jobs have a job or
position description, which explains what needs to be done as a part of that job, and the
areas of responsibility. A job description is a list that a person might use for general tasks, or
functions, and responsibilities of a position. It may often include to whom the position
reports, specifications such as the qualifications or skills needed by the person in the job, or
a salary range. Job descriptions are usually narrative, but some may instead comprise a
simple list of competencies; for instance, strategic human resource planning methodologies
may be used to develop competency architecture for an organization, from which job
