Authors report how the therapeutic relationship can affect various aspects of a patient’s recovery from a FEP. One aspect is the uncovering of hope (McCann, 2002). Having had a psychotic episode often undermines a patient’s motivation, his or her sense of purpose in life, and any hope for the future. An ability to foster hope on the part of a patient is thus considered an important aspect of the role of the professional nurse. The therapeutic relationship can also help alleviate not only anxiety but also confusion and thereby enable the patient to feel more in control
