According to the China's Statistical
Yearbook 2011, the coal shared about 70% of the total primary energy consumption in China in 2010(National Bureau of Statistics of China, 2010).
This coal dominated situation makes the consumption of per unit of energy in China would emit higher greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions and other air pollution (e.g. SO2 and NOx) than
many developed countries. For example, the generation of one kWh
electricity in China produces about 0.8 kg CO2e (National
Development and Reform Commission of China, 2009). However,
to generate one kWh electricity in the UK just makes about 0.69 kg
CO2e (Hawkes, 2010).
