production processesthatarestatistically ‘in-control’. Consequently,thesestandardscannotbeusedto
control qualityindeterioratingproductionprocesses.Moreover,existingcontinuoussamplingmodelsdo
not considerinteractionswithproduction,inventoryandmaintenanceaspects.Inthispaper,weattempt
to fill thesegapsintheliterature.Weinvestigatethejointdesignandoptimizationofatype-1con-
tinuous samplingplan(CSP-1),make-to-stockproductionandpreventivemaintenanceofastochastic
production systemsubjecttobothqualityandreliabilitydeteriorations.TwomodelsofCSP-1arecon-
sidered andcompared:theclassicalCSP-1asinthestandardprocedures,andaCSP-1planwitha
stopping rulethatiscombinedwithcondition-basedmaintenance.Forbothmodels,theoptimization
problem istominimizethetotalincurredcostunderaconstraintontheoutgoingquality.Acombination
of mathematicalformulation,simulationandoptimizationtechniquesisusedtosolvesuchstochastic
and constrainedproblems.Numericalexamplesaregiventoillustratetheresolutionapproachandto
highlight someinterestingaspectsintheinteractionsbetweenproduction,inventory,quality,main-
tenance andreliability.Theresultsobtaineddemonstratethatsamplinginspectionplansrealizesig-
nificant costsavingscomparedtothe100%inspectionwhichiscommonlyusedintheliteratureof
integratedmodels,andthatusingtheCSP-1withaninspectionstoppingrulefordeterioratingprocesses
is morecost-effectivethantheclassicalCSP-1.
