Educate infected and potentially infected patients about the importance of performing frequent hand hygiene, covering the
mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing, properly disposing of used tissues, and avoiding close contact with others
› Educate the patient and family to avoid sharing such items as eating utensils, towels, and bedding until properly washed after
each use with soap and hot water; wear barrier devices (e.g., disposable gloves and/or surgical masks) when in close contact;
and use household disinfectant to clean surfaces that may have been exposed to the patient’s body fluids
› Emphasize the importance of avoiding public places until 10 days after fever and respiratory manifestations resolve or
according to clinician recommendation
