The best conditions to fabricate high performance microcap-sules under single NaCMC systems and NaCMC-SDS formulation
system were discussed. Free flowing capsules with high mechanical strength can be prepared under the conditions around NaCMC
overlap concentration. When incorporating SDS into the system, it
was shown that SDS can play an important role during the microencapsulation by improving the yield as well as the barrier properties
of products, but can lead to adverse effects at higher concentrations
due to competitive adsorption between NaCMC and SDS. Addition-ally, proper molar ratio of reactants (F/U = 1.89) and addition of
ammonium chloride are necessary conditions to fabricate capsules
with good properties. By formation of capsule wall with compact
microstructure, the microcapsules prepared with NaCMC repre-sent better barrier properties and smoother exterior morphologies
than GA-based ones, which is advantageous for the practical use in
electrophoretic display system
