Lesson SOC 19
Task: Find a specific space on a bingo card.
Prerequisites: ADT 4, ADT 5, COG 35, COG 36
Concept: This skill should later lead to actual participation in the game of bingo (SOC 20). The key to success in teaching this skill is to capitalize on the student's ability to recognize letters and numbers (see prerequisites COG 35 and COG 36). Although the ability to find a space on a bingo card is listed as a prerequisite to playing bingo (SOC 20), some students appear to enjoy the group dynamics from participating in the game. This skill therefore is a recommended prerequisite only for the playing of the actual game.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to point to a specific location on a bingo card, the student will correctly identify that space to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: A series of bingo-type cards that use letters and numbers to identify a space, paper, and markers.
Task Analysis:
1. Using paper and markers, create five written samples of bingo locations such as "B29" or "G19." Draw the letters and numbers in a large size. Show each of these cards to the student, one at a time, and if necessary, physically guide the student to point to each sample as you announce the location name.
2. Continue Step 1, asking the student to select the example from one of two choices.
3. Continue Step 2, gradually adding up to five selections from which to choose.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing all physical guidance until only verbal requests are needed.
5. Transfer the skill to an actual bingo card where the student will point to a location you present. Continue until the objective is met.
