Direct head-space is usually used for preliminary classification of an
accelerant present in an investigated sample [3, 16, 20, 22, 33, 36]. If the
accelerant is a light distillate of crude oil (consists of substances with a low
boiling point) and is present in sufficient quantity, then this method can suffice
for identification. If not, it constitutes a screening test, enabling selection
of the best method and conditions for concentrating analytes.
