In recent years, there has been increasing interest and research on the need for effective
listening skills and strategies for ESL university students studying in English-medium institutions (Hyon, 1997). This is because English has become a major language in tertiary education and the language of university lectures (Long & Richards, 1994). Many tertiary institutions in Malaysia use English as the medium of instruction in recognition to the fact that English has become the lingua franca of the borderless community.
