This chapter reports on the use of the European screening-confirmatory strategy for detection of dioxins and PCBs in food and feed. The introduction explains the need for using such an approach for large monitoring programs and highlights the origin of the European Union (EU) pillars strategy and its basis of action. The various biological and physico-chemical screening approaches are described and further compared against each other and versus the confirmatory method. Quantitative and semi-quantitative aspects are discussed from the perspective of specific analytical requirements. The state-of-the-art GC-HRMS (gas chromatography in combination with high resolution mass spectrometry) confirmatory method is also presented and specific quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) aspects are discussed. A discussion of future trends completes the chapter.
