Habitat structure required for healthy marten populations
generally takes decades to develop, and individual
home range requirements are typically very
large for such a small carnivore (see Buskirk and
MacDonald, 1989). Attempts to mitigate the conflict
between timber harvest objectives and marten demand
planning on similar temporal and spatial scales
(Bissonette et al., 1989; Thompson and Harestad,
1994).
