Preference for textbook topics. Most working librarians are not motivated to
develop professionally through reading the LIS literature, published papers,
or participating in conferences and seminars. Therefore, they find courses like
Cataloging in 21st century, Electronic tools for cataloging, and Library portals
as advanced courses and prefer the topics they studied at the undergraduate
level. They ignore the fact that electronic resources have changed the nature of
library operations and services. The changes are so significant that old terms
are giving way to new ones. For example, knowledge organization is the new
term for cataloging and metadata for the catalog record.
