Analysis of molecular variance indicated that a small but significant
(P < 0.001) proportion (11.6%) of the total variation in the
mitochondrial DNA data were attributable to differences among
groups: [Region 1] [Region 2] [Region 3] [Region 4] (see Fig. 1 for
the definition of each region). A significant (P < 0.0001) proportion
of variation also occurred among populations within groups
(42.5%) and within populations (45.9%). More than half (54.1%) of
the total genetic variation occurred among the geographic regions
and among populations within the regions.
