The findings of decreased pain and increased
function in our subjects support the use of physiotherapy
for the rehabilitation of patellofemoral
pain syndrome. More specifically, proprioceptive
neuromuscular facilitation techniques and
aerobic exercise showed better results than a
classic stretching protocol. The reason may be
that proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
techniques have a better reversing effect in the
compartment-specific impairment that is recognized
in patellofemoral pain syndrome. While
the main goal of treatment for anterior knee pain
is to reduce pain and disability, it is not known
how non-pharmacological interventions achieve
this goal; such is the complex multi-factorial
nature of knee pain.
