The Daodejing tells us that philosophical principles like ren (humanity) and yi (righteousness) arose when the Dao declined.
These humanistic values are seen as being inadequate for truly living in harmony with the Dao. They can try to organize human society, but cannot teach about the natural order. And they are too restrictive of the natural freedom in human life.
So the Daodejing advises people to abandon doctrines of human-ness and righteousness—let go of societal restrictions. When we are no longer trying to impose these principles, then the world will revert to its natural harmony.
