Because of the differences in MAS of Thais and Americans, there are differences in greeting men and women. Americans greet both men and women the same way both in their gestures and language. Thais with lower MAS have specific ways of greeting and communicating with men and women. Thais have special words such as “ka” for women and “krub” for men to show respect. When a Thai man greets a woman, too much eye contact and any physical contact is considered as inappropriate. Americans are accustomed to greeting by hugging and sometimes a kiss on both cheeks when greeting woman. If a Thai was to hug or kiss another woman on the cheek in public, it would be considered as inappropriate even if the person is their wife.
