Of the 16 measures collected, 3 were both significantly
different according to category and correlated
with each other. These measures of hairiness, rectal
temperature, and blood glucose are all readily testable
on farm and are, therefore, suggested as potential onfarm
indicators of pig welfare when used in conjunction
with BCS and the subjective judgment of the worker.
Further investigation of these three measures to assess
how they are related to the outcome of the pig (recovery,
euthanasia, or prolonged illness) on farm would be a
useful starting point for on-farm pig welfare assessment.
