PThe results of the investigations enable one to prove the usefulness
of the thermophilic bioreactor composting method for utilizing
MSW. The physicochemical analysis showed that the further
composting of the final stabilized compost from the thermophilic
bioreactor provides good humus to build up poor physical soil
properties and gives basic plant nutrients. Proper mixing in composting
process reduced odour emissions, lower need for C/N ratio
and moisture adding, and a shorter thermophilic and maturation
phase. The higher temperatures and longer retention time contributed
to high reduction of C/N ratio and volatile solids, which were
determined from the optimum compost obtained from the thermophilic
reactor. Seventy-eight percent volume reduction in the
organic fraction of the MSW can be achieved within 40 days. By
adding domestic sewage to MSW, the volume of domestic sewage
is considerably reduced. The problems of fly breeding, odour generation,
and rodents are eliminated because of the closed aerobic
