Man is forced out of the state of nature, because he is keenly aware of his contentious and cantankerous nature. Once he forces himself out, he may obtain peace in return. In return to leaving the state of nature, man will be rewarded by becoming a subject of a government. Man desires peace, but he does not know how to obtain it. His violent nature understands only war, not peace. Government, however, can show him how to live peacefully under the tutelage of the laws of nature. The move from the state of nature to society constitutes a major event in the evolution of human history, concludes Hobbes.
