AB Ellis, the Russian architectural bureau, has developed a very futuristic project called Eco-City 2020. It proposes to build the eco-city inside the crater located on the edge of Mirny, Yakutia, Siberia/Russia. AB Ellis is offering to construct a gigantic structure inside the man-made crater with a diameter of 1 km and a depth of 550 m. In the very diamond mine crater that is depicted in many photographs of Mirny and considered as one of the world’s largest ones. As far as you know, Mirny is the city where ALROSA, the Russian diamond mining company, is based, and it is the administrative center of Mirny region famous for Yakutian diamonds. According to the project, a new city would be able to accommodate more than 100 thousand people. The eco-city is divided into three main levels — forests, living sector and recreation areas. One of the most interesting project aspects is the glass roof of the city covered with photovoltaic arrays for solar energy use. The project concept involves the creation of a new urban garden protected from harsh Siberian conditions in its environment, which is characterized by long cold winters and short hot summers. New futuristic city is designed to attract and host tourists as well as inhabitants of Siberia and the Far East in friendly apartments. The project also provides spaces for progressive eco-systems to sustain the mega-structure. - See more at: http://eyakutia.com/2010/11/mirny-to-move-into-the-crater-and-turn-into-the-eco-city-2020/#sthash.BMCrAmN9.dpuf
