Jim So, Emily, tell us where you have been
dining this week. Do you have any new
places to recommend to our listeners?
Emily Well, actually Jim, I’ve had quite a lot of fun
this week. I felt like doing something
different, so I gave myself the task of
tracking down restaurants in unusual
locations.
Jim And did you come up with any?
Emily Yes, a couple of places, actually. The first
is called The Lighthouse and as you can
imagine, it is situated in an old lighthouse.
Jim That is unusual! How did you get to the
top?
Emily Well, luckily there was an elevator,
otherwise I would have had to climb 548
steps, and believe me, 548 steps is not
something I want to face before I’ve even
had my meal!
Jim And the view?
Emily Spectacular! Unfortunately, I can’t say the
same for the food. I found it over-priced
and disappointing.
Jim Oh dear ...
Emily Yes, I tried the lobster with lemon sauce
and my husband had a pepper steak with
a green salad. The lobster was tasteless,
and my husband found the steak
extremely tough. I will say, though, that the
staff were very friendly, and the
atmosphere was relaxed.
Jim And what about dessert?
Emily Well, I had chocolate mousse, which was
quite forgettable. My husband, however,
ordered apple pie with vanilla ice cream.
As far as we were concerned, this vanilla
ice cream, which they make themselves,
was the most impressive part of the whole
meal.
Jim And the cost?
Emily High! Too high! The bill came to $95.50.
Despite the fabulous view and very pleasant
atmosphere, I can’t say I would go back
there, unless I hear rumors of a new chef,
that is.
Jim You said you’d been to two places this
week?
Emily Well, yes, and again this one was on the
south coast, but quite different to The
Lighthouse. This one was more of a casual,
family style restaurant – and what a setting!
Jim Really?
Emily The restaurant is actually an old wooden
sailing boat, anchored down at the fishing
port. In fact, the restaurant only opened two
months ago.
Jim And the name?
Emily Pirates. That’s all, Pirates. This time I went
along with my two teenage children, and we
had an excellent meal. We decided to skip
the appetizers and go straight to the main
course. I had the roast chicken with
potatoes, which was delicious. My son
ordered an enormous hamburger with
practically everything you can imagine on it,
and my daughter had grilled fish with onion
rings. Again, both simple dishes but
extremely tasty. Actually, the portions were
so large that only my son could manage
dessert. He decided to try the strawberry
cheesecake. I had a spoonful or two myself,
and I must say that it was probably the best
cheesecake I’ve ever had. I don’t know who
the chef is at Pirates, but congratulations!
Jim What about the bill, any surprises?
Emily Well, yes. It was surprisingly inexpensive.
Very reasonable, in fact. Only $29.50 for the
three of us. One thing that I didn’t care for,
though, was the volume of the music – a bit
too loud for my liking, but as you can
imagine, it didn’t bother my children.
Jim So, all in all, you’d go back?
Emily Absolutely! In fact, I am thinking of
organizing my daughter’s graduation party
there ... (fade)
