Consideration of Prospect Theory, known also as the Value Curve, (Kahneman & Tversky, 1971, 1982 & 2005) may provide assistance in answering these question. According to this theory there is a tendency to ascribe a larger risk to a small loss in comparison to the chance of gaining a certain profit. People avoid taking risks even though the potential profit is quite large. This phenomenon is apparent in diverse fields (Ritov & Baron, 1990). Taking a loan is perceived by students as a large risk in comparison to their anticipated income on graduation.
