Two commonly used methods for
improving spinal extension are passive segmental mobilization and
press-up exercises. Maitlandetal
18
advocated the use of a segment-
specific approach (ie, posterior-to-
anterior [PA] mobilization), in which
the intervention is focused on the
specific vertebral levels that demonstrate restricted motion. In contrast,
McKenzie and May 19 advocated a
more general approach, in which a
press-up exercise is used as a means
of decreasing pain and increasing
spinal motion.
