Buyongji Pond, also located within Changdeokgung Palace, has a traditional Korean pond shape originating from the old saying that "Heaven is rouod and the earth is square." A round island floating in the middle of Buyongji Pond rep- resents heaven, and water naturally flows around the island, keeping it from becoming stagnant. There used to be a similar round island inside the Aeryeonji Pond, along with lotus flowers, Lotus flowers were much loved by the Korean ancestors, symbolizing the energy of "a man of honor," because even though it may blossom in muddy water, it avoids getting wet or dirty. Most Korean gar. dens have lotus flowers because of such affection felt towards them by the Korean ancestors.
