Dunlap's Turnaround Strategy al Crown-Zellerbach and Diamond International In 1986 Sir James Goldsmith, an internationally renowned European billionaire who specialized in hostile takeovers and who had been knighted by British prime minister Harold Wilson, interviewed Dunlap for the head position at Crown-Zellerbach, a timberlands company based in San Francisco that had recently become a part of Goldsmith's far-flung business empire. Goldsmith and Dunlap hit it off, and, after listening to Dunlap's rendition of how he engineered the Lily-Tulip turnaround, Goldsmith hired Dunlap as Crown- Zellerbach's CEO. Goldsmith had a major impact in shaping Dunlap's business philos¬ophy and increasing his financial sophistication, plus he introduced Dunlap to his circle of friends and business acquaintances, many of whom possessed considerable wealth and power. Goldsmith, speaking offhandedly to a reporter, once described Dunlap as a "Rambo in Pinstripes"—a person who went into chaotic situations, cleaned them up, fought the good fight, and won the war.
