The Roots of Expansion

Toyota Motors is a prime example of an automobile manufacturer that has embraced globalization.
The automobile industry is no longer confined to a nation’s boundaries. With the high costs of exporting automobiles, the majority of auto manufacturers have decided to construct their products in the very market countries they are targeting. As a result, it is almost impossible to define how an “American”, “German”, or “Japanese” car should be classified.
Until the 1950s, something with the label “Made in Japan” meant a cheap imitation (11). It was not until the Korean Police Action that the label reversed itself to “High quality goods at a discount price”.
Toyota has been a member of the American business community since 1957 Toyota established Toyota Motor Manufacturing, USA (TMM) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada, in 1986(5).
In the United States, engineering on many Toyotas was assisted by the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a result of a total $13 billion investment over sixteen years, the ten millionth automobile was built in America in July, 2002 (3).
The global Toyota is not confined to Japan and North America, however. Manufacturing plants existed in Brazil, Venezuela, Portugal, Kenya, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Australia before 1986 (1). By 2006, there will be 51 production sites outside of Japan.

Georgetown, Kentucky: A Closer Look

As of October 5th, 2004, 5,666,249 vehicles have been produced at the automobile production facility Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK), located in Georgetown, Kentucky.
The history of the plant dates back to 1986, when an $800 million investment by Toyota Motor Manufacturing USA broke ground on a 1300 acre area near Lexington for one of the largest overseas production sites in America (5).
TMMK projects that almost 460,000 automobiles will have been manufactured in 2004 alone.
The beginning was not without difficulties, however.
• Before groundbreaking, the state’s environmental protection agency needed to authorize the facility’s construction, which was finally achieved in July of 1986.
• Later that year, the construction company’s union, a member of the AFL-CIO, retracted their policy of having employees hired on a preferential basis.
• In addition, the incentives granted by the state for TMMK were challenged as unconstitutional, along with the Favorable Taxation Zone enacted for the production plant.
• All problems, however, were resolved by the end of 1987.
The first car rolled off the assembly line in May of 1988.

TMMK gave $1 million to renovate Georgetown’s historic monastery and established a twenty-year program where TMM would contribute $400,000 each year to schools in Scott County (5).
As of today, more than 7,000 people are active employees of TMMK, a critical number due to the nature of the manufacturing industry in Kentucky.
Even today, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Kentucky, Urban League, YMCA Black Achievers, National Conference for Community and Justice, Junior Achievement of the Bluegrass, and the Governor's School for the Arts are just a few of the many organizations that TMMK supports (8)
