2.1.Ethicalconsideration
The trialwasperformedaccordingtotheconductbythe
Certification ofAuthorizationtoExperimentonLivingAnimals
providedbytheUniversityofKwaZulu-NatalAnimalEthics
Committee(ReferenceNumber096/12/Animal).
2.2. Studysite
The studywasconductedatUkulingaResearchFarm,
UKZN, Pietermaritzburg,SouthAfrica.Thefarmislocated
in thesubtropicalhinterland.UkulingaResearchFarmlies
at 301240S, 291240E andisapproximately700mabovesea
level.Climaticconditionsarecharacterizedbyanannual
rainfallof735mm,andmeanannualmaximumand
minimum temperaturesof25.7 1C and8.9 1C, respectively.
2.3. Pigsandhousing
EighteenclinicallyhealthymalepigsofthePICgroup
(LargeWhiteLandrace)withaninitialbodyweight(BW)
of 1471.2kgwereused.Theweanerpigswerepurchased
from Chilternfarm,Cramond,KwaZulu-NatalProvince,
South Africa.Pigswereear-taggedforidentificationand
housed inindividualcages(1.5m1 m).Eachcagehada
plastic self-feedertrough(BigDutchmanLeanMachines)
for dryfeedingandaseparatelow-pressurenippledrinker
to providefeedandwater,respectively.AutomatedHOBO
TEMPERATURE,RH©,1996ONSETdataloggerswereused
to recordambienttemperatureandrelativehumidityat
15minintervalsthroughouttheexperiment.Theaverage
temperatureandrelativehumidityweremaintainedat
21.171.89 1C and41.471.45%,respectively,byuseofa
single heating,lightingandventilationsystem.Periodsof
darknessandlightingwerecontrolledat12hcycles.
2.4. Dietsandfeeding
Six experimentaldietscontaining0,80,160,240,320
and 400g/kgDMofmaizecobwereformulated.A
commercialfeed(ExpressWeaner,MeadowFeedsLtd,
Pietermaritzburg,SouthAfrica)(50g/kgDMoftotaldiet-
ary fibre,TDF),formulatedtomeetthenutritionalrequire-
ments ofgrowingpigs,wasusedasacontrolfeed.The
basal dietcontainedperkgDM425.6gyellowmaize,
175.6gsoybean,83.8gsoybeanoilcake,100.0gwhole
wheat, 100.0gwheatbran,75gsunfloweroilcake,20g
cape fishand20gadditives.Thedilutionofthebasalfeed
with maizecobmealwasnotsupplementedinanyway.
Three pigswereallocatedtoeachdiet.After10daysof
acclimatization, datacollectioncontinuedfor28days.Feed
and waterwereprovidedadlibitum.Thechemicalcom-
positions oftheexperimentaldietsareshownin Table1.
2.5. Measurementofdigestaandpigperformance
The amountoffeedconsumedeveryweekwasesti-
matedbymeasuringtheweightoffeedatthebeginning
and endofeachweek.Feedrefusalsandspillages,air
dried; wereweighedandsubtractedfromweeklyintakes.
After fourweeks,averagedailyfeedintake(ADFI)was
calculatedbydividingthedifferencebetweenthetotal
feed offeredandtotalofrefusalsandspillagesby28days.
The bodyweight(BW)ofeachpigwasdeterminedafter
four weeks.Averagedailygain(ADG)wasdeterminedas
totalweightgainedoverforweeksdividedby28days.
Feedconversionratio(FCR)foreachpigwascalculatedas
the ratiooftheamountoffeedconsumedtoADG.
