Oates (1971) stated that leisure time often involves spending time with family
and friends, which is something that workaholics may not feel comfortable
doing. Skill and knowledge deficits have also been mentioned as reasons why
workaholics are reluctant to engage in leisure pursuits (Oates, 1971; Vodanovich
& Piotrowski, 2008). Not participating in (and/or enjoying) leisure activities
can negatively affect the job performance and creativity of work addicts (Oates,
1971) while leading to diminished psychological and physical health (Brady et al.,
2008).
