Comparing the prevalence rates of these conditions with a recent population-based survey of the same country, depression and generalized anxiety are much higher than in the general population (Chong et al., 2012) – depression occurs in 16.8% of cancer patients but only 5.8% of the general population, while generalized anxiety disorder is found in 9.5% of cancer patients but only 0.9% in the general population. Possible reasons for the elevated rates of anxiety and depression could include the psychosocial stress associated with the morbidity arising from the condition itself and the treatment rendered, and imminent mortality.
