A useful listening post activity is to have the children listen to a recording of everyday sounds such as a tap running, a dog eating its food, a clock ticking or rain falling and identify the sounds orally or by matching them to one of the pictures provided. The ability to notice and discriminate between everyday sounds is in important early listening skill, which usually precedes the development of understandings and skills in phonological awareness.
