Economic Crisis, Unemployment & Training
in BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
Despite the global economic crisis, Brunei Darussalam is well placed to capitalise on
its strategic location in Southeast Asian's growth region and stable political environment to
attract greater flows of international trade and business. But should the global depression
continue Brunei Darussalam will not be insulated from the crisis because all economies are
interlinked
Hence the global economic crisis is not much of a concern in Brunei Darussalam
except for some sectors like the travel and fishery industries; however youth unemployment
is a big concern in Brunei.
Unemployment rate in Brunei Darussalam range 4.0% in 2006 to 3.7% in 2008 and is
classified as frictional unemployment rather than structural unemployment. However, it is
the demographic and education levels of these unemployed that concerned the
Government of Brunei Darussalam.
Based on the latest statistics (September 2009), 70% of the registered job seekers
are between the age of 18 – 30 years and 93% are drop-outs from middle or primary
schools. These job-seekers have difficulties securing jobs due to their education level,
inexperience and job-hopping attitudes.
The Government of Brunei Darussalam has introduced many schemes to help the
unemployed, in particularly the youth. One such scheme is the Graduate and School Leaver
Program, where the governments organised TVET training to upgrade and update these
unemployed youth with marketable skills. Under the same program the Department of
Labour organise Annual Career Carnival, where job-matching sessions are arranged between
prospective job-seekers and employers. In additional during the carnival, Career Clinic is
available for career guidance and counselling to all job-seekers who need them.
