Never apply 70% isopropyl alcohol after a 10% povidone-iodine prep because alcohol negates the effect of the 10% povidone-iodine and may irritate the skin.
If a patient has a known allergy to iodine, the prepping solution of choice is 70% isopropyl alcohol. When you use 70% isopropyl alcohol, you should apply it with friction for a minimum of 30 seconds or until the final applicator is clean.
The INS recommends that you use single-unit containers of antimicrobial solution. Be sure to discard the containers after use.
