Molecular techniques provide powerful tools for the study of insect
population ecology and insect systematics (Hoy, 2003). Among these
techniques, the analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is particularly
useful in providing molecular markers to discriminate between closely
related species and to monitor a specific population in the field (Simon,
1991).
