Police were first called Tuesday afternoon about violence inside the Carmike Hickory 8 movie theater in Antioch, southeast of downtown Nashville.
A 911 call made just after 1:12 p.m. local time reported a man with a gun and a hatchet attacking people inside a theater, according to a recording of the call released late Wednesday night by the Nashville police.
The person who called 911 said that a man “pulled out a hatchet and started attacking this family, and then he pulled out a gun and we all ran out of the theater.”
While the 911 call was taking place, people in the theater ran and alerted police officers who happened to be responding to a crash nearby. As the 911 caller was describing the hatchet-wielding man, officers were heading toward the theater.
Police officers swarmed the scene and a SWAT team arrived at the theater. Within an hour, authorities announced that an active shooter situation at the theater was over and that the suspect had been killed.
