The microbiological quality of water is measured by the analysis and enumeration of indicator coliforms10. The
natural host range of indicator organisms in River Cauvery and Bhavani includes fecal matter of warm-blooded
animals particularly human beings, some cold-blooded animals11, sediments12 and free-living strains13;
therefore, the source of fecal pollution is often ambiguous.
