Poly (lactic acid) or polylactide (PLA) is a thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch. It has the benefits of plastic properties without any negative effects of petroleum based plastics. Particularly, products made from PLA are BPA free and non-toxic. Furthermore, during manufacturing, CO2 emission is much less than those from petroleum based plastic.
But, more importantly, PLA is biodegradable under a controlled environment. It can break down into harmless natural compounds back into the earth in an industrial compositing facility. In other words, it is truly a greener material of the future when compared to conventional plastic material and products.
