Expats should learn the language because it will draw them closer to the people. Thai people are very friendly and caring if you are able to communicate with them. They can be misunderstood if expats can’t communicate with them. Foreigners should also learn to keep their mouth shut if what they are about to say demeans the Thai people, their culture, religion or whatever/whoever they give high regards. Lastly, foreigners should learn the virtue of ‘jai yen yen’.
I’ve learned that I am not here to change what is already here or what Thai people are used to doing however good my idea is so I just have to do my best in everything I do and I would be just fine. I’ve learned to be more friendly, patient and loving with the people around me despite our huge cultural differences. Now, I wish I can stay in Thailand for the rest of my life without worrying about my visa or stable job.
