Lactic acid has a wide application in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical,
textile, leather, and polylactic acid industries (1). Lactic
acid has two isomers, L(þ) and D() lactic acids. Optically pure L- or
D-lactic acid is more valuable than racemic DL-lactic acid because
the physical properties and degradability of polylactic acid are
dependent on the stereochemistry of the individual lactic acid
isomers (2). In addition, L-lactic acid is the preferred isomer in food
preservation and pharmaceutical industries as humans have only Llactate
dehydrogenase whereas D-lactic acid is often harmful to
human metabolism (3).
