The domain of sport
De®ning sport has proven equally as dif®cult,
but as in the case of tourism, common
dimensions have emerged. The popular per-
ception of sport is best re¯ected by the adage
that sport is what is written about on the sport
pages of daily newspapers (Bale, 1989). A
typical dictionary de®nition of sport describes
it as `an individual or group activity pursued
for exercise or pleasure, often taking a compe-
