The maximal PAP expressed by the biomass in the replicate accumulations was not found to correlate to the initial rate of PHA accumulation and, as well, it was not considered to be strictly dependent on the presence or absence of nutrients in the feedstock. Highest observed PAP values were generally obtained with phosphorus in excess and nitrogen in limitation. Therefore, absolute nutrient starvation appears to have been repeatedly suboptimal for mixed culture PHA accumulation. In agreement with previous work (Venkateswar Reddy and Venkata Mohan, 2012), at least some phosphorus seems to be required for an optimal biomass storage response.
