This paper showed a methodology for loss comparison
between different types of devices viz. SiC MOSFETs,
hybrid Si IGBT/SiC diode co-packs and Si IGBTs when
used in direct AC/AC converter. It was proved through
analytical results that the switching losses of a direct AC/AC
converter are 60.7% less than its VSI-based BTB
counterpart. Moreover, for the same switching losses the
direct AC/AC converters can be operated 2.5 times faster
than the VSI-based BTB. Therefore, a strong case was
developed for transitioning to direct AC/AC converters for
high power applications.
