An area of 2.4 m× 6.0 m of each plot was harvested manually at ground level using a sickle on 17 September each year, approx-imately 60 days after planting, which is when the legume crops are generally harvested for forage in the region. The maize was tasseling at the time of harvest. It should be noted that while ses-bania is grown as a perennial fodder tree in many parts of the world (FAO, 1984), in this study it was harvested just after the seedling stage during a period of rapid growth. Component species were bagged separately. Weights of component species were measured and 10 plants of maize were selected at random for recording plant height and stem diameter. Subsamples of maize and the mixture for each plot were sun-dried and placed in a forced air oven at 60 ◦C until there was no weight change to calculate maize, legume, and mixture DM yield; legume yield proportion, and LER as [(mixture maize yield/sole maize yield in that replicate) + (mixture legume yield/sole legume yield for that legume species in that replicate)](Willey, 1979; Mahapatra, 2011).
