The material culture of Southeast Asian countries have many similarities with one another. One factor that contributed to this similarity is the common ecological niche in the region. For instance, bamboo forests are common in the region and thus, there are many handicrafts that are made of bamboo, such as baskets, mats, betel nut containers, and decorative items. On the other hand, shell implements are common in coastal areas of the region, such as shell adzes, bracelets, pendants, and other body adornments. The spread of cultural traditions in the region also contributed to common pottery traditions, textile weaving styles, brassware designs, woodcarving motifs, and other material expressions.
