The Interior Ministry plans to issue title deeds over 180,000 plots of land to villagers nationwide this year as part of its campaign to reduce social inequality.
The scheme will be carried out under the ministry's " reduce inequality, share happiness " project, said deputy permanent secretary at the Interior Ministry Chayapol Thitisak.
"It will ensure people will have legitimate ownership of the land and enjoy legal protection," Mr Chayapol said.
PAST LAND REFORM EFFORTS RIDDLED WITH GRAFT
Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda had expressed concern about the issuing of land ownership documents in the past which were found to be riddled with graft.
The ministry has ordered provincial governors to supervise offices of the Department of Lands (DOL) nationwide to make sure their work is transparent and lawful.
Irregularities at the DOL have caused problems for residents as well as economic damage in the past.
The DOL will expedite the process of issuing title deeds that meet legal requirements.
Land must not be public land or in national parks and every land title deed handed out from now on must be legitimate.
Land surveys must also be done before land deeds are issued.
DEFINITIVE MAPS & LONGER STATE LAND LEASES
The administration is creating a 1:4,000 map or "One Map" project to re-define all state land. The move is aimed to forge a single pattern of map making to be used by all state agencies which currently employ different standards.
The government also plans to amend a law to allow state land to be leased longer -- from 50 years at present to 99 years -- to boost investment.
The 50-year land lease is unattractive for major investment, which requires time to break even.
