Sukhothai Loy Krathong Festival
This festival is held at Sukhothai Historical Park, moon night of the 12 lunar month when the tide is high and the air is cool. “Loy” means to float, and a “Krathong” is a lotus-shaped mand of banana leaves and flowers. The festival is believed to come from Brahmin in which people offer thanks to the River Goddess, Mae Kong Ka.
On Loy Krathong night, people light candles and joss- sticks, make a wish and float their krathongs on rivers or canals. It is believed the krathongs carry away sins, bad luck and all sufferings, and the wishes that have been made for the new year are due to start. It is the time to be joyful and happy as the sufferings float away.
In this festival, you will watch the Nang Nopphamat procession, lighting of lantern at the historical site, Krathongs and fireworks overall rivers and canals, and krathongs competition.
