The rice-grain ears were shaken by the wind and the rain storm. The water flooded over the paddies and then flowed in a deluge into the courtyard. The cattle bellowed in the cowshed, their tumult mingling with the cries of small frightened children. The mountain looked white with the cascades of water rushing down its sides like shooting stars falling in the dark. Scraggly trees on the mountain were uprooted one after the other and carried down on the overwhelming mountain flood which burst straight into the village.
