Vedic India has left us neither temples nor statues nor paintings of any kind, and only literary monuments remain to bear witness to the majesty and the multitudinousness of its gods.
But while the hymns of the Rigveda-at least when a certain poetic afflatus gives them life-sometimes can eloquently tell a divine feat, it is no easy task to identify and classify its heroes.
