Hunching over a tiny screen, with fingers moving at a rapid pace, such a sight is no longer rare. In fact, it is the new norm – where conversations are no longer just take place verbally, but also virtually. Cell phones are now an integral part of our lives, so much so that they have transformed our daily living. The extent of one’s reliance on cell phones can easily be determined when the very device fails.
Living without a phone is like travelling back in time. While one used to be constantly connected to someone or to the virtual world, one now has pockets of free time and has to be comfortable with them. While one used to make dinner plans over a text message, one now has to ask physically, follow through with the plan and not change one’s mind at the last minute. I would know, because I have survived 2 weeks without my phone. It is refreshing to not be constantly wired. Studies have shown that being constantly connected results in mental fatigue. It is also not impossible to live without cell phones. However, it is impractical to do so as cell phones provide much convenience and ease in communication.
A tiny cell phone device has moved past being a mere communication tool. An advanced form of cell phone – smartphone – is the most handy device as of today. Not only does it consist of the main basic phone functions, it also incorporates any gadgets one can possibly imagine: camera, video camera, GPS, internet server, games. With such a useful all-in-one device, one would almost never have to worry about forgetting something important.
