Chapter 9 = The Canyon
In the morning, Alan and Eric left the house.
“Where are we going?” Eric asked.
“We have to walk to the beach,” Alan said.
Eric stopped. “But where are my mom and dad?”
“They were in the InGen building and they didn’t find you. They’ll go to the beach next.”
They came to some open ground and saw a river below them.
“I can see a boat,” Alan said. “We can go down the river,”
Suddenly, they heard a sound—and some music.
“I think that’s my dad’s phone!” Eric said.
He stared to run to the sound. Alan wanted to run with him but Eric was too fast.
“Wait!” Alan called. “How do you know?”
Eric sang to the music. “Kirby Clothes, Kirby Clothes—in Westgate!” The sound got louder. “Dad? DAD?”
The phone stopped but Eric could hear other sounds now. People called his name.
“Mom! Dad!” Eric shouted.
He came out of the trees and then he saw them. He started to run again. They ran too, but between them was a huge dinosaur fence.
Eric got to it first.
** “I can see a boat,” Alan said.
“My baby,” Amanda said. She put her hands through the fence. “You’re OK. You’re OK.”
“He’s fine,” Paul said. “Kirby men are strong and smart.”
“That’s right,” Eric said with a smile.
Then Alan arrived. “Too much noise,” he said. He smiled too.
“How did you find us, Eric?” his dad asked.
“I heard your phone,” Eric said.
“My phone?” his dad asked. He thought hard. Then his mouth fell open and his face turned white.
“What?” Amanda asked. “WHAT?”
“I gave it to Nash,” Paul said quietly.
Eric looked at his parents. “Who’s Nash?” he said.
The sound of the phone came again, and the sound of huge feet. Then a dinosaur came out of the trees. It was five meters high and fifteen meters long. Its head was long and thin and it had a lot of teeth.
Spinosaurus, Eric thought. And this dinosaur ate Nash.
The Spinosaurus opened its mouth. Rahhhhrrr-grah-hhrrr!
“Run,” Alan said quietly.
They all ran, with the fence between them.
Alan saw a small hole in the fence. “Through there,” he shouted.
Eric went through. Then he turned. The Spinosaurus was half a meter behind Alan. Its mouth was open. Then Alan got through.
They all ran to a building near the canyon. Eric looked back. The Spinosaurus was through the fence now.
Alan pulled the doors open and they all got inside. Then they heard the feet of the dinosaur. It hit the door again and again, but it couldn’t get in.
Alan looked around the room. It had big windows so people could see the canyon below. But what could you see in the canyon?
**My baby,” Amanda said. “You’re OK. You’re OK.”
He looked out a window but there was too much fog below.
He looked at Billy. “Udesky?” he asked. “Where is he?”
“Raptors got him,” Billy said. He shook his head. “They hurt him first. We tried to help but they ran at us. We climbed the trees but Udesky was too slow.”
Alan listened. “OK,” he said. “Now we have to move.”
“Wait,” Billy said. “Listen—I’m very sorry. I was stupid.”
Alan looked at him. He didn’t understand.
“Look in my bag,” Billy said.
Alan opened Billy’s camera bag. Inside were two Raptor eggs.
“We can study them at home at home,” Billy said.
Alan looked at him. “The Raptors followed us for these eggs,” he said. “You understand that?”
“Yes, but I wanted money for our work. I’m sorry.”
Alan shook his head. “You’re bad as InGen,” he said.
**Udesky was too slow.”
