This systematic review aimed to address three questions: (1) what
can be determined about the overall quality of cessation interventions
using NRT for adolescents? (2) On which methodological quality
aspects do the interventions excel? (3) Where does the greatest
opportunities for improvement lie?
The eight interventions reviewed scored high or moderately high on
the quality measures, with the studies scoring overall well on three of
thefive criteria. Among Criterion 1, research design, the studies which
used randomized designs scored well. With the exception ofSmith et al.
(1996)andHurt et al. (2000), each of the studies was a randomized
controlled trial (RCT) with pre- and post-tests. RCTs are often considered
the gold standard within medical and behavioral research as they provide
objective knowledge while minimizing bias (Kaptchuk, 2001).
Each of the studies scored well on providing information regarding
characteristics of participants (Criterion 3). Inclusion criteria and baseline measures for each of the studies were extensive, and each report
contained information about demographic and behavioral assessments.
Additionally, all butRoddy et al. (2006)) andHanson et al. (2008)included initial health assessments. Additional characteristics that might
ndividual and total ratings for each methodological criterion for the
eight studies evaluated in this meta-evaluation are listed inTable 4.
With a possible range of 0–23,scoreswerebrokenintolow(0–5),
moderately low (6–11), moderately high (12–17), or high (18–23).
This meta-evaluation resulted in scores ranging from 12 to 18. Two
studies received a high overall rating score of 18 (Hanson et al., 2003;
Killen et al., 2004), while the remaining studies scored moderately
high. A discussion of these interventions, the methodological criterion
scores, and future implications follows
